The Milla Digital Project is currently being managed by the Department of Science and Technology of Zaragoza City Council, in direct collaboration with the Zaragoza Alta Velocidad corporation (whose associates are the Ministry of Development (GIF and Renfe), the Government of Aragon and the Zaragoza City Council of Zaragoza and whose objective is the urban development of the area around the former “El Portillo” station and the area around the new AVE or high-speed train station).
Other collaborators of the Milla Digital Project are the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), the University of Zaragoza (Engineering Research Institute of Aragon (13A) and the Group of Socio-economic Studies), the Zaragoza “Ciudad del Conocimiento” Foundation and the Committee of Experts of Zaragoza City Council comprised of Willian Mitchel, D. Manuel Castells, Saskia Sassen, etc.
The most important milestones of the Project have been:
- Incorporation of the Steering Committee (Sept. 2004)
- Preparation of the Master Plan (Nov 2004)
- Approval by Zaragoza Alta Velocidad 2002 S.A. (March 2005)
- Approval of the urban planning (AC19 El Portillo in December 2005; AC44 Delicias Station Area in October 2006)
- Discussion by the International Committee of Experts (July 2005)
- Technical studies of the University of Zaragoza / I3A on telecommunications and domotics (May-September 2005)
- Research and design by Media Lab and the Department of Urban Studies and Planning of the MIT (September 2005 - January 2006)
- International call for ideas for the design of the El Portillo-Almozara Linear Park, where the public facilities of Milla Digital will be located: August 2006
- Agreement with the MIT to execute a line of intelligent urban furniture whose prototypes will be implemented in Milla Digital in 2008 (September 2006)
- Drafting of the urban development projects (December 2005-October 2006)
- Forecast for the start of urban development works (December 2006 / January 2007)
- Availability of the first places and implementation of the digital systems: June 2008
